Why Is My Tooth Loose?
When you’re a little kid expecting the tooth fairy, having a loose tooth can be fun. For an adult, however, a loose tooth can be less exciting – especially because it’s often a sign of a more serious concern.
As a top cosmetic dentist with nearly two decades in practice, Dr. Kevin Sands has observed that loose teeth can point to a variety of potential issues, such as:
- Periodontal disease. Gum disease is the leading cause of loose teeth in adults. Bacteria in the gums can lead to infection, which can then progress to the bone and weaken the tooth’s support structures.*
- Trauma or injury. Accidents, sports injuries, or even biting down on something hard can cause a tooth to become loose.
- Osteoporosis. This condition, which is characterized by a decrease in bone density, can affect any bone in the body – including those that support the teeth.
- Pregnancy. Elevated levels of progesterone and estrogen during pregnancy can temporarily loosen the tissues and bones that keep your teeth in place.
If you notice a loose tooth, we advise you to reach out to our office right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can often save the tooth and prevent further deterioration of your oral health. Depending on the cause, Dr. Sands may recommend deep cleaning, medication to fight infection, or possibly a splint to stabilize the tooth. Meanwhile, as always, we advise you to maintain your oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums strong.
